MJ, this one’s for you – Team Sonu Niigaam (A tribute to Michael Jackson on his 51st Birthday)

About 2 months back, Smitha Passanha informed me about a tribute that Sonu Niigaam was organizing for Michael Jackson and that he was looking for singers to participate in this effort. I sent in one of my MJ covers (Beat It) and ended up being one among the intial 6 chosen singers. I was thrilled to say the least and at the same time extremely humbled.

This project is a true testimonial to the fact that the world is shrinking thanks to the Internet. The vocalists were spread all over the world (Canada/US/UK/India) and each of us recorded our vocals remotely and sent it in. The song and the video was then compiled and mixed by the team.

The whole experience was just mind blowing and definitely the biggest project I have been part of thus far! The whole team did such a great job in every respect!!! Special thanks to Sonu for envisioning this project and more importantly following through on it and coming up with a truly fitting tribute to MJ!!

Mere Khuda – Original Composition by Rishi and Vishwa Deepak sung by George and Tara

Tara introduced me to Rishi and his work. Rishi was kind enough to give me the opportunity to sing this composition of his. Even though I was caught up during the time, I knew I had to try and sing this one the very first time I heard the composition. The lyrics are by Vishwa Deepak. Really really glad I got to be a part of this project and I want to thank Rishi, Vishwa and Tara for this opportunity. Do check out Rishi’s compositions here

Kiss From a Rose (Seal Cover)

This one is my wife’s pick. One of Seal’s most popular songs for which he won 3 grammys in 1996. I like this because the tune was quite unique as compared to the other songs during that time period. Not to mention Seal’s vocals. Hope all of you enjoy this one.

Yellow (Coldplay Cover)

Quite a few friends have requested me to sing this song. So here it is. Chris Martin sang this song in such a heartfelt fashion. Needless to say, the lyrics are beautiful. You can interpret it however you like. I always thought of it as a love song 🙂

Man in the Mirror (My tribute to the legend – Michael Jackson)

I never realized how much MJ influenced me till I heard the news yesterday about his death. I was in a trance for a while looking back at my childhood yrs and how his music was there all through! He has influenced all of us in some way or the other. Needless to say that there will NEVER be another MJ or anyone even close as his music/dance transcends time..

This cover of Man in the Mirror is my tribute to the legend. RIP MJ!

Part Time Lover – Stevie Wonder Cover

First of all, I want to thank Shonnie Madan from Muziboo for reminding me of this song. I had totally forgotten about this song and then I heard her cover, which prompted me to sing this.

There is a reason why I havent covered Stevie Wonder to date. Its coz he is nothing short of a Genius. His vocal range and style of singing is hard to mimic. This is my fav song of his. I did introduce some variations (couldnt resist).

Let me know what you think.

Name (Goo Goo Dolls Cover)

This is an extremely emotional song written by the John Reznik, lead singer of the group Goo Goo Dolls. His parents died when he was young and his sisters brought him up. One of the common interpretations of this song is that it reflects on his childhood.

My wife is very fond of this song and hence it goes out to her.

Lambada (Originally sung by Kaoma)

I wanted to do something totally different and hence picked this song. This is a song by the French group Kaoma. Lambada is actually a form of dance for couples that is very popular in Brazil. There are a number of songs based around this dance form and this one is probably the most recognized world wide.

The song was originally sung by a woman. I did not want to change the scale as I felt it would ruin the beauty of the song. This definitely ranks as one of the toughest songs I’ve covered coz of the style, all the subtle expressions and nuances and ofcourse the language.

Hope this takes you down memory lane 🙂

Adiyae Kolluthey (With Meera and Srividya)

This song is from a recent tamil movie called Varanam Aayiram. Both Meera and Srividya suggested this song and hence I ended up doing it with both of them. Both are extremely talented singers and have their own distinct styles (which I am sure you will be able to distinguish). My vocals are pretty much the same in both versions, however the harmonies are slightly different. I thank both Meera and Vidya for suggesting this song, providing the track and for singing with me.

Kaadhalikkum Pennin (With Tara Balakrishnan)

Tara and I have worked on a number of projects in the past and happens to be one of my favorite female vocalists. This is a song from one of A.R Rahman’s classics, Kaadhalan. I hope this cover makes you wanna get up and dance 🙂 Thanks Tara for a fantabulous job as always!!!!
