Catch the Rainbow (Rainbow Cover)

Rainbow

This is probably one of my top 5 most favorite songs of all time. I used to listen to this on loop endlessly back in college and I’ve waiting almost 10 yrs to do this song. I was never able to find a guitarist to cover this for me (due to the complexity or lack of interest) or find a track (as this is not a popular song).

So you can only imagine my joy in finally being able to sing this. Sung originally by one of my idols, Ronnie James Dio (who later joined Black Sabbath) with guitarwork by Ritchie Blackmore (from Deep Purple), this is a true masterpiece. The vocals in the original are soulful and powerful at the same time in true Dio fashion and the guitarwork is to die for. You will find the range of this song quite unique (starts low and then goes really high)

I have done the harmonies slightly different from the original, but at the same time tried to get the soul element as rendered by Dio. Hope this song makes at least some of you check out Rainbow 🙂 Enjoy!

I also want to take this opportunity to thank Ashish Vaswani (batchmate at BIT and a good friend of mine) for introducing me to this song back in the day!!! Thanks bro!

Lyrics:
When evening falls
She’ll run to me
Like whispered dreams
Your eyes cant see
Soft and warm
She’ll touch my face
A bed of straw
Against the lace

We believed we’d catch the rainbow
Ride the wind to the sun
Sail away on ships of wonder
But life’s not a wheel
With chains made of steel
So bless me come the dawn
Come the dawn

One Step Closer – Linkin Park Cover

I’ve wanted to cover a Linkin Park for long now and here it is finally! This is one of my favorites – One Step Closer. This is classic Linkin Park showcasing their Nu Metal/Rap Rock style. I love the riffs and the attitude with which Chester Bennington sings. I’ve tried to capture the emotions (anger/hate) as much as I could.

This one goes out to Anup Menon, who is a die hard Linkin Park fan.

Across the Universe (Beatles Cover) – Dedicated to Amma

This is a vintage Beatles number, written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and sung by Lennon. I love this song for various reasons but the two main ones are the simplicity of the melody, the amazing lyrics.

This song is dedicated to my dear Amma as it happens to be one of her favorite songs. She sang it back in the day while she was doing her MA. Hope you like it Amma 🙂

Kahin To – with Smitha Passanha(From Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na)

This is my favorite song from the movie Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. I am very happy to upload my first duet with Smitha. Shes done a fab job singing. She had some issues with her recording setup as a result of which her voice sounds a little muddy. As always, harmonies have been added. Hope you guys enjoy this one!

Sudeip and George cover Beat It (Michael Jackson Cover)

I love Michael Jackson and think hes an artist whose music transcends time. He defined a generation! Heres the story behind this venture…..I was working on an original composition with a friend of mine and wanted Sudeip to do the guitarwork for it. So I suggested he try something like the guitar work in Beat It and Sudeip agreed. Around 9:00 pm I got a call from Sudeip and he said “I have a surprise for you. You know I’m crazy right? So guess what I did?” I had no clue! It so happens he had worked on Beat It instead of the original composition!!!! Needless to say I loved it and the rest is History!!

Sudeip and I go back a long way. We met back in college where he was my super senior. It is thanks to him that I started singing in college, it is thanks to him that I joined Muziboo and most importantly it is thanks to him that my wife heard me sing for the first time. I had a blast working with him on this and hope this is the first of many to follow!

Mundhinam Parthene – With Tara Balakrishnan

This song is from the tamil movie Vaaranam Aayiram, and is just my second tamil attempt. I’ve worked with Tara before and she’s done a splendid job on this song. Special thanks to her and Meera for helping with in understanding the lyrics, pronuniciation and expressions. Tara and I have added a few variations and introduced some new harmonies at the end of the song. Hope you all enjoy this cover. We would appreciate your feedback!

Ek Meetha Marz – With Srividya Kasturi

This is my first duet with Srividya. I want to thank her for introducing me to this beautiful song and for singing this with me. I think she has done a splendid job!

As compared to my other covers, I’ve introduced very few (if any) improvisations in this song based on advise I received from people like Dhiraj, Tara etc. Srividya has introduced a few subtle variations which I feel complimented the song beautifully.

Vidya and I would like to thank Soumitra and Vidyu for lending us this karaoke track. Much appreciated guys!!!

Special thanks to Tara and Meera for reviewing the song a zillion times and helping us improve the end product. Thanks a lot guys!!

Learning to Fly (Tom Petty Cover)

Tom Petty

My wife and I were on the road a month back or so, and happened to hear this song. She had a sudden desire to hear me sing this song and so here it is! This is a Tom Petty classic. Its kind of odd that I listen to Tom Petty almost every day and yet this is the first Tom Petty song that I’m covering.

For those of you who are familiar with the song, I’ve altered the harmonies and changed the ending too just to give it a different flavor.

For those who are listening to Tom Petty for the first time and like this song, do check out some others like Running down a dream, Free Falling, Wont back down etc.

Tu Hi Meri Dost Hai – Duet with Meera Manohar

This is my first collaborative effort with Meera Manohar. Meera is a veteran audio blogger. She is a regular performer in live shows in the Bay area. She has a very distinct melodious voice and is classically trained. I want to thank Meera for giving me this opportunity.

This is probably the most recognized song from the movie Yuvraaj. There are some variations in our version as compared to the original. We’ve introduced some harmony to add color to the song and make it sound fuller. Looking forward to hearing from fellow bloggers on our rendition.
