Kangal Irandaal (With Meera Manohar)

Meera suggested this song a while back. All I can say is that I fell in love with it instantly when I heard it and decided to give it a shot. I have always been open to trying different styles of music, but I was very skeptical about this one. There were several factors that made me feel this way including the scale (being too low), the style (semi classical) and the language (me being pathetic with most languages). I dont think I’ve ever been so involved in covering a song and was totally immersed in this song for a period of 4 days or so. I probably drove Meera and Tara nuts in the process, both of whom helped me immensely in getting my part perfected (to the best of my abilities).

Meera has done a great job as always and has added a nice carnatic touch to this. She also came up with some nice backing vocals towards the end giving the song a different feel. I wanna thank her for insisting that I can do this song even when I was about to throw in the towel and for all the help with diction, expressions etc.

Hope you all enjoy this rendition!

Catch the Rainbow (Rainbow Cover)

Rainbow

This is probably one of my top 5 most favorite songs of all time. I used to listen to this on loop endlessly back in college and I’ve waiting almost 10 yrs to do this song. I was never able to find a guitarist to cover this for me (due to the complexity or lack of interest) or find a track (as this is not a popular song).

So you can only imagine my joy in finally being able to sing this. Sung originally by one of my idols, Ronnie James Dio (who later joined Black Sabbath) with guitarwork by Ritchie Blackmore (from Deep Purple), this is a true masterpiece. The vocals in the original are soulful and powerful at the same time in true Dio fashion and the guitarwork is to die for. You will find the range of this song quite unique (starts low and then goes really high)

I have done the harmonies slightly different from the original, but at the same time tried to get the soul element as rendered by Dio. Hope this song makes at least some of you check out Rainbow 🙂 Enjoy!

I also want to take this opportunity to thank Ashish Vaswani (batchmate at BIT and a good friend of mine) for introducing me to this song back in the day!!! Thanks bro!

Lyrics:
When evening falls
She’ll run to me
Like whispered dreams
Your eyes cant see
Soft and warm
She’ll touch my face
A bed of straw
Against the lace

We believed we’d catch the rainbow
Ride the wind to the sun
Sail away on ships of wonder
But life’s not a wheel
With chains made of steel
So bless me come the dawn
Come the dawn

One Step Closer – Linkin Park Cover

I’ve wanted to cover a Linkin Park for long now and here it is finally! This is one of my favorites – One Step Closer. This is classic Linkin Park showcasing their Nu Metal/Rap Rock style. I love the riffs and the attitude with which Chester Bennington sings. I’ve tried to capture the emotions (anger/hate) as much as I could.

This one goes out to Anup Menon, who is a die hard Linkin Park fan.

Across the Universe (Beatles Cover) – Dedicated to Amma

This is a vintage Beatles number, written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and sung by Lennon. I love this song for various reasons but the two main ones are the simplicity of the melody, the amazing lyrics.

This song is dedicated to my dear Amma as it happens to be one of her favorite songs. She sang it back in the day while she was doing her MA. Hope you like it Amma 🙂

Kahin To – with Smitha Passanha(From Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na)

This is my favorite song from the movie Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. I am very happy to upload my first duet with Smitha. Shes done a fab job singing. She had some issues with her recording setup as a result of which her voice sounds a little muddy. As always, harmonies have been added. Hope you guys enjoy this one!
